“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven.” — Matthew 6:19-20

Reflection

Jesus was remarkably direct about money. More direct, in fact, than almost any other subject He addressed. Not because money is evil -- it isn't -- but because He understood how powerfully it competes for the throne of our hearts. He said plainly: where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

The rich farmer in Jesus' parable had every material security a person could want. Full barns. Future plans. Complete comfort. And God looked at him and said, "You fool." Not because he was wealthy, but because he had confused accumulation with life. He had mistaken the container for the content. He had filled his barns with grain and emptied his life of purpose.

Jesus offers an alternative economy. An economy where the things that truly matter -- love, faithfulness, generosity, righteousness -- are invested in ways that time cannot erode and circumstances cannot destroy. Treasure in heaven is not a consolation prize for people who missed out on earthly wealth. It is the only investment with a guaranteed eternal return.

Every act of genuine generosity is a deposit in that account. Every sacrifice made out of love for God and people is stored somewhere that no market crash can touch. You are not losing when you give. You are transferring. Moving resources from the temporary to the eternal. And that is the wisest financial decision you will ever make.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, recalibrate my understanding of wealth. Help me to see clearly what lasts and what fades. I want to invest in things that matter eternally. Show me today where to transfer my treasure. Amen.
