Reflection
Just days after God the Father had spoken clearly from heaven at Jesus' baptism — "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased" — the devil showed up in the desert with a single word: if. He didn't open with an outright lie. He opened with a question. A nudge of doubt.
If you are the Son of God. Are you sure? Because if God really loved you, would he leave you out here starving? The attack was on Jesus' identity. And that is always where temptation begins.
Every significant temptation in your life is ultimately an attack on who you are in God. The person who drinks too much is hearing a whisper: God can't satisfy you — you need this. The person chasing approval is hearing: God's love isn't enough — you need people to validate you.
The person who can't stop scrolling through someone else's life is hearing: your life isn't enough. Before the temptation is about the specific sin, it's about whether you believe God is sufficient for you. The root is always the same: doubt about your identity as a beloved child of God.
Action Step
Identify one recurring temptation in your life. Trace it back to its root: what lie about your identity or God's sufficiency is underneath it? Write it down and then write the truth that counters it.
Prayer
Father, you have spoken my identity clearly: I am your beloved child. Help me believe that today so that no temptation can find a foothold. Amen.
