Scripture of the Day
"Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven." -- Matthew 5:16
Reflection
Mahatma Gandhi, who spent his life studying the world's great religious traditions, once said: "I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ." It is one of the most convicting things ever said about the church -- and it points to a real barrier that keeps many people from faith.
People are not primarily rejecting Jesus. They are rejecting the version of him they have seen lived out -- imperfectly, sometimes hypocritically, occasionally with cruelty -- by his followers. And their reluctance is understandable. When religion becomes a set of rules enforced without love, it does not attract people to Christ. It drives them away.
The sermon's diagnosis is clear: followers who do not have the genuine anointing of the Holy Spirit will have a religion of rules without the Spirit's love -- and that religion will wound people rather than heal them. The solution is not to lower the standards of Christian living. It is to go deeper into genuine encounter with Christ, so that what flows from us is not performance but transformation.
If you have been wounded by Christians, do not give up on Jesus. He is not responsible for every person who has claimed his name. Judge him by who he actually is.
Question for Personal Reflection
Have you allowed the failures of Christians to shape your view of Christ himself? Or have you been a stumbling block to someone else?
Action Step
Pray today for someone who has been hurt by the church, and ask God to show them the real Jesus.
Prayer
Lord, make us so genuinely like you that no one who encounters us has reason to confuse you with us at our worst. Amen.
