Reflection
We often relate to Jesus based on confused or incomplete pictures of who he actually is. Some may think of Jesus as a divine candy machine - just say a prayer and get what you want. Others think of Jesus as a kind friend, but one who lacks the power to help us. Still others see Him only as a great teacher.
The story of Jesus' transfiguration in Matthew 17 is the answer to the question, "Who is Jesus, really?"
On that mountain, the disciples didn't see a great teacher or a helpful life coach. They saw someone whose very appearance radiated divine glory — His face like the sun, clothes blazing white. This wasn't a new development. This was Jesus as He truly is, with the veil momentarily pulled back.
Peter's instinct was to do something useful — build shelters, manage the moment. But the voice from heaven interrupted him with a simpler instruction: listen. Before we can follow Jesus effectively, we need to see Him clearly. Not the version we've constructed from cultural assumptions or childhood impressions, but the actual Jesus — radiant, powerful, and yet reaching down to touch frightened disciples on the ground.
Action Step
Write down in one sentence who you thought Jesus was when you were younger. Then write who you believe he is today. Notice what has changed — and what still needs to.
Prayer
Lord, correct every wrong picture I have of you. Let me see you as you truly are — glorious, powerful, and near. Amen.
