"And suppose the one inside answers, 'Don't bother me. The door is already locked, and my children and I are in bed. I can't get up and give you anything.'"
Reflection
In Jesus' parable, the man inside gives three reasons for not helping: the door is locked, the children are sleeping, and he feels powerless to help. These excuses mirror the doubts we often face in prayer. Sometimes it feels like heaven's door is barred shut, that God can't be counted on, or that we're bothering Him with our requests.
"The door is locked" represents those times when God seems silent or distant. We knock, but nothing happens. We pray, but circumstances don't change. We cry out, but heaven seems brass. The locked door becomes a symbol of all our fears about prayer—that God doesn't care, isn't listening, or has better things to do than help us.
"My children are in bed" reflects our worry about bothering God. We think our problems aren't worthy of His attention. We know He has the whole universe to run, wars to prevent, disasters to avert, and surely our small concerns pale in comparison. We convince ourselves it's better not to trouble Him with our "minor" issues.
"I can't get up" represents the lie that God is powerless to help us, that prayer doesn't really change anything. We've prayed before without seeing results, so we conclude that prayer has no real power. We decide it's better to rely on ourselves than to hope in divine intervention.
But Jesus tells this story to reveal the absurdity of these thoughts. The man inside isn't really God—he's a picture of our misconceptions about God. The real God never sleeps, is never too busy for His children, and certainly isn't powerless to help. Every locked door has a key in His hand.

Lord, forgive me for the times I've assumed You were too busy, too distant, or too powerless to help. You are never sleeping, never bothered by my needs, and always able to do more than I can imagine. Help me trust You with the locked doors in my life. Amen.
