"Be still in the presence of the LORD, and wait patiently for him to act." - Psalm 37:7a (NLT)
Reflection
Christmas can feel overwhelming. Between family expectations, financial pressures, and the weight of another year passing, we sometimes feel under siege—surrounded by circumstances beyond our control. Like Jeremiah imprisoned during Jerusalem's darkest hour, we wonder if God sees us.
Yet even in captivity, Jeremiah heard God's voice. Not because his circumstances improved, but because he was listening. The prophet was "attuned to God's voice" even when that voice asked him to do something that seemed crazy—buy worthless land during a siege.
This Advent season, you might be facing your own siege. Health concerns. Strained relationships. Financial uncertainty. The stress of trying to make Christmas "perfect" when life feels broken. But here's the promise: even when you can't hear God, God hears you. Jesus said, "My sheep hear my voice." Your prayers don't have to be eloquent. "God, I'm over my head" is enough.
The Incarnation—God becoming flesh in Jesus—is the ultimate proof that God enters our sieges. He doesn't just observe from heaven; He comes down into the mess, the darkness, the fear. Emmanuel means "God with us," not "God watching from afar."
Reflection Question
What in your life feels like a "siege" right now—what's overwhelming or threatening you?
Action Step
Set aside 20 minutes this week for silence. Take a walk, sit in a quiet room, or watch the sunrise. Bring only your honest prayers: "God, I'm afraid. God, speak to me."
Prayer
Lord, in the noise and chaos of this season, help me be still. Bend down and listen to my voice, as You promised. Even when I cannot hear You clearly, remind me that You hear me. Speak to my heart, Emmanuel—God with us. Amen.
