Scripture of the Day
“For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” — Matthew 18:20
Reflection
After years of exile in Babylon, the people of Israel returned to Jerusalem to find ruins. The walls were broken. The Temple was silent. Everything that had once structured their common life as God's people was gone. Nehemiah led the effort to rebuild the wall -- and it was important. Without security, nothing else was possible.
But the wall was never the point. It was the means to an end. The point was this: could the people again become a community gathered around the presence and Word of God?
The same question confronts every congregation in every generation. We build structures -- physical, organizational, programmatic -- and they are necessary. But the real question is always deeper: What are we being gathered for?
The answer in Nehemiah's day was clear. They were gathered for the renewal of their spiritual center. God was dealing with their hearts. The word was read, the tears came, the joy was declared, and the generous impulse to send food to the poor followed naturally. A community formed by the Word begins to look like the Word.
When a congregation gathers around Christ -- in his Word, in prayer, in honest grief, in holy joy -- it becomes more than an institution. It becomes a family.

Lord, make us more than an institution. Gather us around you, and form us into a family. Amen.
