Reflection

Here is one of the most remarkable details in the story of Mary's offering: the perfume she poured on Jesus likely had not faded six days later when He was crucified. In a world without daily bathing, twelve ounces of nard-based perfume would have lingered. Which means that as Jesus hung on the cross -- in the midst of the smell of blood and dust and death -- the fragrance of Mary's worship may still have been present.

Her one act of extravagant love outlasted the moment it was given. It was still speaking, still fragrant, still present at the most important moment in human history. And Jesus said it would be remembered wherever the gospel was preached -- which means it is still speaking now, two thousand years later, in this very devotional.

What you offer to God today will linger longer than you know. The prayer you pray over your child, the act of service given quietly without recognition, the surrender made in a private moment of worship -- these do not evaporate. They remain. They linger in the lives of people who were touched by them, sometimes long after you have forgotten you offered them.

What offering from your past -- a moment of surrender, sacrifice, or service -- might still be lingering in someone else's life in ways you cannot see?

Write a note or make a call to someone whose faithful offering has lingered in your own life, and tell them specifically what it meant.

Prayer

Father, I am grateful that nothing offered to You in genuine love is wasted or forgotten. What I give today, You preserve. What I do in faithfulness, You multiply. Help me live with the awareness that my ordinary offerings have extraordinary staying power in Your hands. May something I do today still be fragrant long after I have forgotten it. Amen.
