Reflection

Saint Francis of Assisi was a passionate, devout man who belonged to a religious order and lived a cloistered life. Yet he famously went from village to village shouting, "The whole world is our cloister!" He understood something that we easily forget: the sacred is not confined to church buildings or monastery walls. Every room, every street, every workplace, every relationship is holy ground for those who are abiding in Christ.

Most of us are not called to enter a convent or a monastery. But all of us are called to bring the inner life of abiding into the outer life of our daily work. The teacher who prays for her students. The businessman who works with integrity as if God Himself were his employer. The parent who serves their family as an act of worship. The neighbor who shows kindness because the Spirit of Christ is flowing through them.

This is the outward expression of abiding — what the preacher calls "consistent, intentional acts to honor the Christ in you." It is not spectacular in the eyes of the world. But it is the very thing that makes the Christian life beautiful and credible.

You don't need a monk's cell to abide. Your kitchen table is a cloister. Your office is a cloister. Your commute is a cloister. The question is whether you are treating it that way.

How would your ordinary day look different if you genuinely treated every place you go as sacred ground where Christ is present with you?

Before you enter your workplace, your home, or your next appointment today, pause and say a brief prayer dedicating that space and time to God.

Lord, let me carry Your presence into every place I go today. Make my ordinary moments holy. Let my work be worship, my conversations be ministry, and my life be a cloister where You are honored in everything I do. Amen.
