Reflection

Human promises age poorly. In the 1940s, IBM's president claimed there was a world market for "about five computers." In 1954, the National Cancer Institute suggested smoking played only a "minor role" in lung cancer. In 1966, Time magazine predicted remote shopping would "flop" because women liked getting out of the house. History is littered with confident predictions that proved laughably wrong.

But God's promises? They've been tested across millennia and never broken. When God told Jeremiah to seal that property deed in a clay jar, He was making a statement: "When I make promises, I keep my word." Thirty-seven hundred years later, Isaiah's promise still stands: "They that wait upon the Lord will renew their strength." Two thousand years later, Jesus' declaration remains true: "I will build my church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it."

The Christmas story is the centerpiece of God's faithfulness. For centuries, prophets spoke of a coming Messiah. Born of a virgin. In Bethlehem. Of David's line. Suffering servant. Conquering king. Skeptics could dismiss these as wishful thinking—until that night when heaven and earth collided in a stable, and every ancient promise found its yes in Jesus.

This Advent, you're standing in a long line of people who waited for God to fulfill His word. Some saw it in their lifetime. Others died in faith, not receiving the promise but believing it from afar. But everyone who trusted God was proven right eventually.

Prayer

Eternal God, Your promises have outlasted empires and endured through centuries. When I'm tempted to doubt, remind me that You have never—not once—broken Your word. Help me trust that what You've begun in my life, You will complete. Amen.
