"I will put my Spirit upon him, and he will proclaim justice to the Gentiles." — Matthew 12:18 (ESV)
Reflection
When Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit descended on Him like a dove. Even though He already possessed the Spirit from His miraculous conception, this moment marked a new resting of God's power upon His shoulders — the Spirit's anointing for the mission ahead.
And notice that the Spirit was not given to Jesus for comfort alone, but for service. Power to heal. Power to teach. Power to bless. Power to endure. The same Spirit that rested on Jesus — the Spirit that raised Him from the dead — is the Spirit who dwells in every believer.
Suffering has a way of making us feel spiritually depleted, as though the Spirit has somehow withdrawn. But Scripture never teaches that. The Spirit is not a fair-weather companion who leaves when things get hard. He is the Comforter who draws nearest in the valley.
In your suffering, the Spirit is actively interceding for you with groans too deep for words. He is sustaining you. He is praying through you when you cannot find the words. He is the reason you have not given up. You are still standing not by your own strength, but by His.
Reflection Question
In what way have you experienced the sustaining presence of the Holy Spirit in a past season of suffering?
Action Step
Spend time today praying in complete dependence on the Holy Spirit — not with prepared words, but simply asking Him to intercede through you.
Prayer
Holy Spirit, I cannot carry this alone. I ask You to pray through me, sustain me, and remind me that You have not withdrawn. You are the reason I am still standing. Be my strength again today. Amen.
