Reflection
Jesus didn't overcome temptation on willpower alone — and neither will we. That's actually good news, because most of us have tried the willpower approach and found it deeply unreliable. We make promises at the end of a hard day that we can't keep by the middle of the next one. The reason isn't lack of sincerity. It's that willpower is the wrong tool for this particular battle.
Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit at his baptism, and it was the Spirit who led him into the wilderness — and, we can infer, the Spirit who sustained him through forty days of fasting and three rounds of temptation.
The same Spirit that was in Jesus is available to every follower of Jesus. This is the staggering promise of the New Testament. You are not fighting temptation alone. You have an advocate, a counselor, a sustainer living inside you. When you don't have the words to pray, he intercedes. When you're too tired to resist, he provides strength. When you can't see the way out, he illuminates it.
The Christian life was never designed to be lived in your own strength. It was designed to be lived in the power of a divine Person who has made his home in you.
Action Step
Before the moment of temptation arrives, ask the Holy Spirit this morning to fill you and make you alert. Pray specifically: "Spirit of God, lead me away from temptation today and strengthen me where I am weak."
Prayer
Holy Spirit, I can't do this on my own. Fill me today. Intercede for me when I don't know how to pray. Be my strength where willpower fails. Amen.
