The Son of Man Who Serves

"For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Mark 10:45 (NIV).

Reflection

Jesus' favorite title for Himself was "Son of Man"—a phrase that emphasized both His humanity and His divine calling. He was ordinary like us, with emotions and physical limitations, yet He fulfilled an extraordinary purpose. While the crowds expected a conquering Messiah who would overthrow Rome through force, Jesus revealed a different kind of kingdom built on service and sacrifice.

The title "Son of Man" echoes Daniel's prophecy of an exalted figure who would receive worship from all nations and establish an eternal kingdom. But Jesus redefines what true exaltation looks like. In God's kingdom, the path to greatness runs through the valley of service.

This wasn't just a philosophical teaching for Jesus—it was His life mission. He didn't come to accumulate power, demand service from others, or build an earthly empire. He came to serve and give His life as a ransom. Every act of healing, every moment of teaching, every gesture of compassion was service to others, ultimately culminating in the ultimate service: laying down His life on the cross.

As followers of Jesus, we're called to embrace this same servant-hearted approach to life. When we understand that our Lord came not to be served but to serve, it transforms how we view our relationships, our work, and our purpose. We're not called to climb ladders of success by stepping on others, but to wash feet and serve sacrificially.

The beauty of Jesus' example is that it shows us what true strength looks like. It takes greater courage to serve than to demand service, greater power to give than to take, and greater love to sacrifice than to be selfish.

Reflection Questions

  1. How does Jesus' example of servant leadership challenge your understanding of greatness?
  2. In what ways are you tempted to seek your own comfort and convenience over serving others?
  3. Who in your life could you serve more intentionally?

Action Step

Look for an opportunity today to serve someone without expecting anything in return. Let this act of service be motivated by Jesus' example of sacrificial love.

Prayer

Jesus, thank You for showing us what true greatness looks like through Your servant heart. Help me to follow Your example by putting others before myself. Transform my heart to find joy in serving rather than being served. Use me as Your hands and feet to bless others today. Amen.
