"Thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ." - 2 Corinthians 2:14-15

Reflection

The early church grew from a few thousand to over 25 million believers by the fourth century—not primarily through organized evangelism campaigns, but through what Keith Miller called "the scent of love." People would observe these Christians gathering in back alleys, speaking of strange things—a man, a tree, an execution, an empty tomb. Though the message seemed confusing, something irresistible drew outsiders in.

What was it? The way believers spoke to one another, looked at one another, cried and laughed together. They embraced people who wouldn't normally associate. This community gave off an unmistakable fragrance that attracted others, even before they fully understood the Gospel.

These early Christians intentionally cared for the sick, widows, and orphans. They took in unwanted babies. During plagues and disasters, they stayed to care for others while everyone else fled. They believed God's love was for everybody—that their Heavenly Father loved every person so greatly that He sent His Son to die for every soul.

We can recapture that dynamic today. People will know we belong to our Heavenly Father not because we're the loudest or most powerful, but because of our love. When we become peacemakers, we spread the fragrance of Christ everywhere we go.

Reflection Question

What "scent" do people detect when they encounter you? Does your life spread the fragrance of Christ's love and peace?

Action Step

Perform one intentional act of care for someone today—especially someone who cannot repay you. Let your actions spread the aroma of Christ.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, make me an aroma of Your love in this world. Help me to care for others with such genuine compassion that people are drawn to You through my life. Let the scent of love be evident in how I treat everyone I encounter today. Amen.
