Luke 9:28 — "Jesus took Peter, John and James with him and went up onto a mountain to pray."
Reflection
We often focus on the spectacle of the transfiguration — the glowing clothes, the heavenly voice, Moses and Elijah appearing — and miss something quietly significant: Jesus went up the mountain to pray.
He was standing at a turning point. His cross in Jerusalem was ahead. And before stepping toward that suffering, Jesus sought the presence of his Father.
Scottish theologian William Barclay suggests Jesus may have gone to confirm that going to the cross was indeed God's will for his life. That's a remarkable thought. Even the Son of God, in his humanity, sought clarity and strength through prayer before his hardest moment.
There's enormous comfort in that. If Jesus needed to anchor himself in the Father's presence before walking into suffering, how much more do we?
Prayer isn't a religious formality — it's how we orient ourselves to God's will before stepping into the unknown. The mountain wasn't just a dramatic backdrop; it was a place of preparation. And Jesus modeled for us that the most important thing we can do before a hard season is get alone with God and listen.
Action Step
Identify one hard thing ahead of you in the next month. Set aside 15 minutes this week to specifically pray about it — not just asking for outcomes, but asking for God's will and strength.
Prayer
Father, teach me to pray before I act, to seek your presence before I face hard things. Strengthen me the way you strengthened your Son. Amen.
