“Because of the service by which you have proved yourselves, others will praise God for the obedience that accompanies your confession of the gospel of Christ.” — 2 Corinthians 9:13

Reflection

There is a phrase in this verse that deserves careful attention: proved yourselves. Paul is saying that generosity is not merely a spiritual discipline -- it is a proof. It is evidence. It demonstrates that what you say you believe has actually taken root in your life.

Anyone can confess a creed. Anyone can say the right words, attend the right services, know the right theology. But what you do with your resources -- how you hold your money, how you use your time, how you respond to need -- that is where belief proves itself genuine or hollow.

This is both convicting and clarifying. Convicting, because it means our habits of generosity are a kind of testimony -- and that testimony either reinforces or undermines what we say we believe. Clarifying, because it means we don't have to argue the gospel into people's hearts. We can demonstrate it. We can live it in a way that is visible and compelling.

When a community of people -- any community, in any city -- begins to give sacrificially and joyfully, the watching world takes notice. People who would never walk through a church door begin to ask questions. Why do they do that? What motivates that kind of giving? What do they know that I don't?

Your generosity is a sermon. It preaches even when you are not speaking. And it preaches to people who might never listen to any other sermon you could give.

If someone could see only your financial habits and how you used your time -- with no other information about your beliefs -- what would they conclude about what you value most?

Ask God today to show you one specific way your generosity could become a more visible testimony to the people around you who don't yet know Him.

Prayer

Lord, let my life prove what I say I believe. Let my generosity be a sermon that speaks to people words cannot reach. Make my open hands a visible sign of the grace that has changed me. Amen.
