“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” – Matthew 5:3
Reflection
To be “poor in spirit” is to recognize our utter need for God. It’s not about low self-worth, but about spiritual awareness — that apart from God, we bring nothing. This isn’t how the world defines the good life. Culture rewards independence, confidence, and control. But Jesus begins His most famous sermon by flipping the script: dependence is the gateway to the kingdom.
Why is this the starting point? Because we cannot enter God’s kingdom clinging to self-sufficiency. We come as beggars, spiritually bankrupt, with nothing but need — and that’s exactly when God draws near. The blessed life begins when we let go of our grip on ourselves and rest in the sufficiency of Christ.
Prayer
Father, I confess my deep need for You. Help me live today aware of my dependence on You in all things. Teach me to come to You not in strength, but in surrender. Amen.
