"I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." — John 8:12 (ESV)
Reflection
The darkness of a valley can feel absolute. When grief descends, when a diagnosis comes, when a relationship shatters — it can feel like the light has gone out. But consider this: when you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, the shadow is evidence that there is a light. You cannot have a shadow without a light source. The darkness you feel is not the absence of God — it is often proof that His light is near.
Jesus declared, "I am the light of the world." This is one of the great "I AM" statements of John's Gospel — deliberate language connecting Jesus to the divine name revealed to Moses (Exodus 3:14). Jesus is not just illuminating — He is Lord of all light and all life. The darkness does not overcome Him (John 1:5). He walks into the darkest valleys and the light goes with Him.
Following Jesus as Lord is not a guarantee of easy paths or bright, sunny days. It is a guarantee that wherever the path leads, we do not walk it in darkness. He goes before us, and His light reveals the next step — not always the full picture, but enough. Psalm 119:105 says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." The Lord gives us what we need for the step we are on, and that is enough.
Reflection Question
Where is it darkest in your life right now? How might Jesus be the light in that specific place, even if only one step at a time?
Action Step
Spend time in God's Word today looking for a verse that speaks light into your current darkness. Write it down and pray it back to God.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You are the Light of the World. Shine into the darkest corners of my life today. Help me to follow You even when I cannot see far ahead. You are Lord of the light, and where You are, darkness cannot remain. Lead me forward. Amen.
