Scripture of the Day
"The Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost." -- Luke 19:10
Reflection
Zacchaeus was not a sympathetic figure. He was a short man -- literally and figuratively -- who had made himself rich by cheating his own people as a tax collector for the Roman occupiers. He overcharged, pocketed the difference, and had done so long enough to become wealthy. When Jesus passed through Jericho, the crowd pressed in, and Zacchaeus -- too short to see over anyone -- climbed a sycamore tree to get a look.
When Jesus spotted him up in the branches, the crowd likely expected a rebuke. Everyone knew what kind of man Zacchaeus was. But Jesus said something no one anticipated: "Zacchaeus, come down. I'm coming to your house today."
The encounter transformed him entirely. Before Jesus even sat down at his table, Zacchaeus stood up and announced he was giving away half his wealth and repaying anyone he had defrauded four times over. No sermon. No demand. Just the sheer recklessness of Jesus' love -- choosing the one person in Jericho most people wanted to avoid -- and the encounter did what years of social pressure and religious condemnation never could.
This is the gospel. Not reserved for the deserving. Offered to the most unlikely person in the tree.
Question for Personal Reflection
Is there something in your past -- a way you have failed, a reputation you carry -- that makes you feel disqualified from Jesus' attention?
Action Step
Read Luke 19:1-10 today and place yourself in the tree. Let Jesus look up at you.
Prayer
Lord, you came for Zacchaeus, and you come for us. Find us where we are perched and call us down into the life you have for us. Amen.
