"On the first day of the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, for the good hand of his God was on him. For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel." (Ezra 7:9-10, ESV)

Reflection

What made the prophet Ezra successful wasn't his education, charisma, or natural abilities. The secret to his impact was simple: the good hand of God was upon him. Without God's blessing, even our most excellent character and honorable actions fall short of bringing true transformation.

This truth should both humble and encourage us. We can be thankful that our effectiveness doesn't rest solely on our shoulders. God's good hand of power, blessing, guidance, and help is what we need most. Yet we also discover that we can position ourselves to experience God's hand more fully in our lives.

Ezra understood this principle. He set his heart—devoted himself completely—to knowing God through Scripture, living it out, and teaching it to others. This wasn't mere intellectual study or casual Bible reading. It was a wholehearted commitment that shaped every aspect of his life. Because of this devotion, God's hand moved powerfully through him to bring spiritual awakening to an entire nation.

Give thanks today that God's goodness isn't distant or passive. His hand actively works in the lives of those who seek Him wholeheartedly.
