Scripture of the Day
"Has the Lord as much delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as in obeying the voice of the Lord?" -- 1 Samuel 15:22
Reflection
The idea that God has a sense of smell strikes us as strange until we realize what it actually means. God is not delighted by the chemical composition of burning wood or expensive perfume. What He perceives -- what reaches Him as a pleasing aroma -- is the condition of the heart behind the offering.
This is both comforting and convicting. It is comforting because it means that a small gift given from a generous heart is as fragrant to God as a large gift given from great wealth. The widow's two coins filled heaven with more fragrance than many a grand donation. What God smells is the love, the faith, the surrender -- not the dollar amount or the impressive scale of the deed.
But it is also convicting, because it means that religious activity performed without a willing heart is odorless at best and offensive at worst. Samuel had to tell King Saul that his elaborate sacrifice meant nothing because his heart was in the wrong place. We can sing, serve, give, and attend faithfully and still offer God a life that smells of self-interest if our hearts are not genuinely His.
The question is never simply what you are offering, but from where it is being offered.

Is there any religious routine in your life that has become more about appearance than genuine surrender?
Action Step
Before you do one ordinary act of service or devotion today, pause and ask, "Lord, is my heart in this?"
Prayer
Father, search me and know me. Reveal any place where I am going through the motions rather than truly offering myself to You. I don't want a life of religious performance -- I want a life that genuinely pleases You from the inside out. Amen.
