Reflection

One of the most remarkable things about the gathering in Nehemiah 8 is that nobody called a meeting. No announcement was made from the top down. No leader issued a summons. The people simply came -- drawn together by a hunger that only God could have stirred. This is what revival looks like at its beginning: not a program, but a people who find themselves moving in the same direction at the same time, drawn by the same irresistible longing.

We tend to think of spiritual renewal as something that happens to individuals in isolation -- a quiet moment of personal conviction, a private rededication of faith. And those things are real. But the picture in Nehemiah 8 is a community picture. "All the people came together as one." Not some of the people. Not the spiritually mature. All of them. Men, women, and children who could understand gathered in one place for one purpose.

There is something that happens in a gathered community that cannot happen alone. When you hear a word of God that convicts you, and you look around and see tears in the eyes of the person beside you -- something happens in that shared moment that deepens what the Spirit is doing. Revival is not merely private. It is corporate. God gathers his people because he intends to do something among them that requires them to be together.

Is there a hunger in you that is drawing you toward others in the body of Christ? Don't dismiss that pull. It may be the beginning of something God wants to do.

When did you last feel genuinely drawn toward the gathered community of God's people -- not out of obligation, but out of hunger? What was stirring in you?

Reach out today to one person in your church community you haven't connected with recently. Make a plan to gather -- for coffee, for prayer, for anything. Show up to the community God is calling you toward.

Prayer

Lord, you are a God who gathers. You drew your people together in Nehemiah's day and you are still drawing people together by your Spirit. Stir in me a hunger for your gathered people. Remind me that I was not made for isolated faith. Pull me toward the body of Christ with the same holy gravity that pulled those thousands to the Water Gate. Let revival begin in me as I choose to show up. Amen.
