Scripture of the Day
“Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin” — Zechariah 4:10
Reflection
It is easy to feel that your contribution is too small to matter. You look at your budget, your schedule, your abilities, and you think -- what difference could this possibly make? And in that moment of comparison and discouragement, you do nothing. And the nothing adds up.
But God has a long and glorious history of using small things.
A little girl named Hattie May Wiatt saved 57 cents under her pillow -- a child's savings, coin by coin -- with a handwritten note expressing her hope that more children could go to Sunday School. She died at age eight. Her mother gave those coins to the pastor. He told the story, then sold each coin for a dollar as a fundraiser. That multiplied the gift. He then took those dollars, converted them into pennies, and sold them, retelling the story of Hattie May's generosity again and again.
Twenty-six years later that pastor stood before his congregation and traced what had grown from 57 cents: a building seating over five thousand, a hospital, and a school that became a major university -- all rooted in a child's small, sincere gift.
God is not impressed by large amounts. He is moved by faithful hearts. The widow whom Jesus commended gave two small coins. Jesus said she gave more than all the wealthy donors. Why? Because she gave from her whole heart, holding nothing back.
Do not let the smallness of what you have to give become an excuse for giving nothing. Give what you have. Give it faithfully. Give it with love. And trust the God of multiplication to do the rest.
Question for Personal Reflection
Have you ever dismissed an opportunity to give because you thought what you had to offer was too small to matter? What might God have done with that small gift?
Action Step
Give something small today that you might normally hold back -- a few dollars, fifteen minutes of your time, a handwritten note of encouragement. Offer it as an act of faith.
Prayer
Lord, I bring what I have -- even when it feels small and insufficient. You are the God who multiplied five loaves and two fish. I trust You with what I place in Your hands today. Let it be more than enough for whatever You intend. Amen.
