The Fragrance of Obedience

Scripture of the Day

“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” — John 14:15

Reflection

We tend to think of worship as something that happens in a service, and obedience as something that happens afterward -- as if they were two separate categories. But Jesus collapses the distinction entirely. Love expressed in obedience is worship. Doing what He says is a form of fragrant offering.

This is how Jesus Himself lived. He gave words of thanks to His Father. He gave what He had to others. He gave all His time to the purposes of God. And in the end He did the hardest thing the Father asked -- He went to the cross. His obedience was His offering, and Paul says it rose to the Father as the ultimate pleasing aroma.

When you choose to forgive the person who wronged you because Jesus said to -- that is fragrant. When you tell the truth in a situation where lying would be easier -- that is fragrant. When you love the difficult person, serve the ungrateful neighbor, or persevere in faithfulness through a season when nothing seems to be working -- that is fragrant. Every act of willing obedience carries the scent of Christ.

The fragrance of your life is not determined primarily by how you feel about God. It is determined by what you do because of Him.

Question for Personal Reflection

Is there a specific command of Jesus that you have been aware of but slow to obey?

Action Step

Identify one command of Christ that you will choose to obey today, specifically and concretely, as an act of worship.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, I want my love for You to show up in what I do, not just what I feel. Today I choose obedience as worship. Where I have been slow to follow, give me courage. Where I have been resistant, soften me. Let my doing be as fragrant as my singing. Amen.
