Reflection
As we step into a new year with fresh hopes and resolutions, Jesus offers us a surprising starting point for blessing. The word "blessed" that Jesus uses—makarios—means a deep, spiritual joy that comes from your relationship with God, not from circumstances or possessions.
In our culture, we're told that blessing means having it all together—the perfect job, the ideal family, financial security, and success. But Jesus turns this completely upside down. He says blessing comes to those who are "poor in spirit"—those who recognize their utter helplessness and inadequacy apart from God.
Being poor in spirit means acknowledging that you can't do life on your own. It's the opposite of self-sufficiency. It's recognizing your complete neediness before God and putting your whole trust in Him. This is revolutionary in a world that celebrates independence and self-made success.
The truly blessed life begins when you stop depending on yourself and start depending completely on God. This isn't weakness—it's wisdom. Because when you humbly accept your need for God, you become a citizen of His kingdom, where generosity reigns and love has the final word.

Lord, help me to be poor in spirit—to recognize my deep need for You. I can't do this life on my own. Teach me to depend completely on Your wisdom, provision, and strength. Thank You that Your kingdom belongs to those who humbly trust in You. Amen.
