"Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!" — 2 Corinthians 9:15

Reflection

Everything begins here. Before we talk about giving, before any discussion of amounts or percentages or strategies, we have to start with receiving. The Apostle Paul, one of the most educated and articulate men of his generation, comes to the end of his great passage on generosity and reaches for a word that appears nowhere else in the entire New Testament. He essentially runs out of language. The gift of God through Jesus Christ is, in his word, indescribable.

That word matters. Paul isn't being casually enthusiastic. He is making a profound theological statement: what God has done for us in sending His Son cannot be fully captured in human language. It exceeds our vocabulary. It surpasses our categories. It outlasts our best attempts to explain it.

And here is why that matters for generosity: you cannot give from a foundation of guilt or obligation and sustain it for long. Guilt runs dry. Obligation grows resentful. But gratitude -- genuine, deep, gospel-rooted gratitude -- that is an inexhaustible well. When you truly understand what God has given you, your hands begin to open naturally. Generosity becomes not a discipline you force but a response you can't contain.

Start here. Start with the gift. Let it land in your soul again today.

When did you last pause to genuinely reflect on what God has given you in Christ -- not what you've done for Him, but what He has done for you?

Father, I confess I often rush past the gift. Today, slow me down. Let the reality of Your grace settle into me in a fresh way. Let gratitude be the ground I stand on -- not just today, but every day. Thank You for the indescribable gift of Your Son. Amen.
