Scripture of the Day
"God demonstrates his own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." -- Romans 5:8
Reflection
There is a true story about Abraham Lincoln from his early days as a young lawyer in Illinois. An angry man came storming into his office demanding that Lincoln sue a poor man who owed him $2.50. Lincoln had no interest in the case -- the creditor was wealthy and didn't need the money, the debtor was poor and couldn't pay it -- but the court eventually compelled him to take it. So Lincoln did something remarkable.
He charged the wealthy plaintiff $10 in legal fees. Then he brought in the poor defendant, gave him $5 for his time, and asked him to confirm the debt. He did -- and promptly paid his $2.50 from the $5 Lincoln had just given him. The rich man got his $2.50 and never realized he'd spent $10 to collect it. The poor man left with money in his pocket and his debt cleared. An advocate he couldn't hire had resolved a matter he couldn't win -- and paid the cost himself.
This is a picture, imperfect but vivid, of what Christ has done. We owed a debt we could never repay. He became our advocate, absorbed the cost, and cleared the record. All we had to do was agree to the terms.
Question for Personal Reflection
Have you fully received the gift of what Christ has done, or are you still trying to pay off a debt that has already been settled?
Action Step
Spend a few minutes thanking God today specifically for the debt he cleared -- not in general terms, but for your actual story.
Prayer
Lord, we had nothing to offer and no way to pay. Thank you for the advocate who stepped in and settled everything. Help us live in that freedom. Amen.
