"Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." — 2 Corinthians 9:7

Devotion

God loves a cheerful giver. That phrase has been quoted in church settings for centuries, but it is worth slowing down to feel the full weight of it. God — who owns everything, who needs nothing, who could compel any response He wanted — is moved by cheerfulness. Not the amount. Not the percentage. The heart behind it.

The Greek word translated "cheerful" is the word from which we get our English word "hilarious." It carries a sense of bubbling-over, overflowing gladness. God is not looking for the reluctant compliance of someone who gives because they feel they have no choice. He is not honored by the tight-lipped obedience of someone doing the minimum to satisfy a requirement. He is delighted by the person who gives with genuine joy — who has understood grace so deeply that giving feels like privilege, not burden.

This verse also contains a quiet but powerful statement about freedom. Paul says give what you have decided in your heart.The decision belongs to you. God does not want to manipulate it out of you. He wants you to come to it through prayer, reflection, and genuine response to His grace. There is no formula here, no mandated percentage, no peer pressure. There is an invitation: seek God about what to give, make a genuine decision, and then give it with joy.
