Stewards, Not Owners

"The earth is the Lord's, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it." - Psalm 24:1 (NIV)

Reflection

Joseph owned nothing in Potiphar's house, yet he was entrusted to manage everything. This is a perfect picture of our relationship with all we possess. We never actually own anything during our brief time on earth. God loans it to us. It was His before we arrived, and it will be His after we're gone.

This truth transforms everything. When you realize you're a manager rather than an owner, the pressure changes. You're not responsible for creating wealth or security—you're responsible for faithfully managing what the true Owner has placed in your care. Every possession, every dollar, every resource belongs to God. He created all things through Jesus and for Jesus. The cattle on a thousand hills are His. The fields, the animals, the birds—everything bears His ownership stamp.

John Wesley understood this profoundly: "When the possessor of heaven and earth brought you into being and placed you in this world, he placed you here not as a proprietor, but as a steward." By God's grace, you're authorized to act on His behalf. What an incredible privilege and responsibility! The question isn't "What do I want to do with my stuff?" but "What does the Owner want me to do with His resources?"

Reflection Question

Do I make financial and material decisions as an owner or as a steward managing someone else's property?

Action Step

Before making your next purchase or financial decision, pause and ask: "God, how do You want me to steward this resource?"

Prayer

Heavenly Father, I confess that I often act as if I own what You've merely loaned to me. Forgive my possessiveness and entitlement. Help me embrace my role as Your steward, managing Your resources according to Your purposes. Give me wisdom to distinguish between my wants and Your will. May I hold everything with open hands, acknowledging You as the true Owner of all. Amen.
