Perhaps the deepest brokenness we experience comes from recognizing our own sin and its devastating effects on ourselves and others. Godly sorrow over our failures isn't self-condemnation—it's the beginning of transformation. When we truly see how our sin hurts those we love and grieves God's heart, it breaks us in a way that leads to repentance.

This kind of brokenness before God is precious to Him. David wrote these words after his sin with Bathsheba, recognizing that external religious rituals mean nothing without a genuinely broken and contrite heart. God doesn't despise our brokenness over sin—He treasures it because it opens the door to forgiveness and transformation.

Prayer becomes the sacred space where we bring our moral failures, our shame, and our desperate need for forgiveness. We don't have to clean ourselves up before approaching God. He loves it when we come with broken hearts over our sin because that's when true healing can begin.

The blessing God gives to hearts sorry for their sins is complete forgiveness. "As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us" (Psalm 103:12). This forgiveness, received through prayer and confession, brings comfort that surpasses all other consolations.
