Philippians 2:7 — "He emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men."
Reflection
Over 80 times in the Gospels, Jesus calls himself the Son of Man. It's his most frequently used self-description, and it's deliberate. He got hungry. He got tired. He felt joy and frustration and sadness. He wept at the tomb of his friend Lazarus. He felt alone at the end. He was disappointed by his disciples when they fell asleep in the garden when he had asked them to stay awake and pray. This is not a performance of humanity — it's the real thing.
Philippians tells us that Jesus, though fully God, chose to empty himself of divine privilege and take on the full weight of human experience. He didn't live as a God pretending to be human. He was fully, authentically, vulnerably human.
That matters enormously for us. When you are exhausted and feel like you can't take one more step, Jesus knows that feeling. When you are grieving and the pain is physical, Jesus has been there. When anxiety keeps you awake at night, Jesus understands the weight of that. He is not a distant deity who dispenses advice from above.
He is the Son of Man — someone who has lived in your skin.
