Reflection
The missionary David Livingstone's first encounter with the gospel happened in a small, cold church in Scotland on a miserable winter day. The crowd was modest. Many of those gathered were elderly. A returning missionary gave his appeal for laborers in Africa. Most people in the room would have had every reason to feel that the gathering was too small to matter.
But a boy who pumped air into an organ bellows stood up and changed history.
And years later, when Livingstone's life was in danger on another continent, it was the faithfulness of another modest gathering -- 39 people on a cold night -- that surrounded him with divine protection.
We are easily discouraged by small numbers, slow growth, and quiet seasons. We measure significance by the size of the crowd. But God keeps a different ledger. He records the names of those who showed up, who prayed, who said yes when no one was watching.
The size of the room does not limit the reach of faithfulness. What happens in a small church on a cold night in Scotland can change what happens in Africa. What you pray today, in private, may sustain someone you love in a danger you'll never see.
