Reflection

The missionary David Livingstone's prayer has outlasted his biography: "Lord, send me anywhere, only go with me. Lay any burden on me, only sustain me. Sever any ties, but the ties that bind me to your service and to your heart." He prayed it as a young man, and he lived it until his last breath -- literally found on his knees in prayer at the end of his life, having never stopped interceding for the people he loved.

What made Livingstone's life extraordinary was not unusual talent or exceptional courage, though he had both. It was availability. He heard the call, he said yes, and he kept saying yes through decades of hardship, illness, loss, and isolation. He became the kind of person who could say "send me anywhere" because he had genuinely put his whole life in God's hands.

This is the posture that revival produces. When God's word has done its work in a community -- when hunger has been fed and grief has been honored and joy has been received -- what comes next is sending. People who have been genuinely renewed by the Spirit do not turn inward and guard what they've received. They become available. They say, with Isaiah, "Here I am. Send me."

The question is not whether God has a mission. He does. The question is whether we are available to it -- whether we have loosened our grip on our own plans and comforts enough to say, wherever you want, however you want, for as long as you want. That prayer, honestly prayed, changes everything.

What ties -- to comfort, to safety, to a particular plan for your life -- would need to be loosened for you to genuinely pray Livingstone's prayer and mean it?

Pray Livingstone's prayer today, slowly and honestly: "Lord, send me anywhere, only go with me. Lay any burden on me, only sustain me. Sever any ties, but the ties that bind me to your service and to your heart." Write down what surfaces as you pray it -- the places of resistance, the places of longing.

Prayer

Lord, I want to be available to you. I confess the ways I have held back -- the plans I have protected, the comforts I have been unwilling to release. Take everything that competes with full surrender. Bind my heart to yours. And then send me wherever you need me to go, knowing that if you go with me, no burden is too heavy and no place is too far. Amen.
