Reflection

When Mary arrived and greeted Elizabeth, the baby in Elizabeth's womb leaped for joy, and Elizabeth was immediately filled with the Holy Spirit. Something about God's presence through Mary caused this incredible response. Both women were immersed in God's presence—Elizabeth was righteous and blameless in observing God's commands, and Mary was obedient, saying "let it be to me as you have said." These women had joy together because God was at the center of their relationship.

God's presence is the world's greatest source of joy. David wrote, "In Your presence there is fullness of joy"—not in circumstances, good health, or having everything you want. The fullness of joy is found in God's presence. But it's hard to experience His presence when life is busy. Many struggle to feel God's presence amid the demands of work, parenting, and daily responsibilities.

Consider Susanna Wesley, mother of nineteen children in the 18th century. With no modern conveniences, she still prioritized time with God. Her solution? She would sit in her kitchen, throw her apron over her head, and pray. Everyone knew: when Mama's got her apron over her head, you don't bother her. She spent up to two hours daily in prayer and Scripture—in the middle of clatter and crying and chores. God's presence isn't confined to church buildings or mountaintops. You can encounter Him in your daily grind when life is noisy and messy.

When and where could you create your own "apron over the head" moment to seek God's presence daily?

Set aside 10-15 minutes today to be alone with God—put away distractions and simply rest in His presence.

Prayer

Lord, I long for the fullness of joy that comes from Your presence. In the chaos of my daily life, help me create space to meet with You. Whether in silence or in noise, help me recognize that You are near and that in Your presence, I will find the joy my heart craves. Amen.
