"'An enemy did this,' he replied. The servants asked him, 'Do you want us to go and pull them up?' 'No,' he answered, 'because while you are pulling the weeds, you may uproot the wheat with them.'" Matthew 13:28-29

Reflection

Perhaps one of the most difficult lessons in this parable is Jesus' clear instruction: don't pull up the weeds. Our natural inclination when we see evil or error is to want to root it out immediately. We want to judge, condemn, and remove anything that seems contrary to God's kingdom. But Jesus warns that our efforts to purify the field might actually damage the good that's growing.

This doesn't mean we become passive about evil or compromise our convictions. Rather, it means we recognize that our discernment is limited and our methods of "weeding" might be flawed. The document shares a powerful example of a woman who initially judged Muslims but allowed God to transform her heart, leading her to become their greatest advocate. Had she acted on her initial judgment, she would have missed God's redemptive work.

Perseverance includes learning to focus our energy on positive cultivation rather than negative elimination. Instead of spending our time identifying and condemning the weeds around us, we invest in loving, serving, and encouraging the growth of wheat. This doesn't mean ignoring evil, but rather choosing to combat it with good rather than with judgment.

The wisdom of this approach becomes clear when we consider how often we've been wrong in our assessments of people. Those we thought were weeds may have been wheat in early stages of growth, and our harsh judgment could have stunted their development.

Prayer

Father, forgive me for the times I've acted as judge rather than gardener. Help me to focus on sowing love and encouragement rather than identifying and condemning what I perceive as weeds. Change my heart toward those I struggle to love. Amen.
