James 4:7 — "Humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you."
Reflection
Jesus wasn't tempted once and done. The devil came back a second time with a different angle, and then a third time with his biggest offer yet — all the kingdoms of the world in exchange for one act of worship. Three rounds. And Jesus resisted each one, with increasing directness.
His third response was the most forceful of all: "Away from me, Satan." There's something important here for anyone who has given into a temptation and assumed the battle was lost. The pattern isn't: one temptation, one resistance, done. The pattern is: temptation, resistance, more temptation, more resistance, more temptation, stronger resistance.
You are not failing because you are still being tempted. You are in the fight. James tells us to resist the devil — actively, repeatedly — and the promise is that he will flee. Not might. Will.
The devil is not omnipotent. He has no ultimate authority over a child of God. He can only maintain a foothold if you stop resisting. And even when you have stumbled, the invitation is to get back up, anchor yourself again in your identity, and resist the next wave.
Every act of resistance, however small, is a victory.
Action Step
Think of one area where you gave in to temptation recently and felt defeated. Decide now — before the next moment of pressure arrives — what your response will be. Write it down as a declaration: "I am a child of God and I will resist."
Prayer
Father, I don't have to be defeated. Give me courage to resist the devil today and faith to believe he will flee. I stand in your strength, not mine. Amen.
