"So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord... and he called out, 'Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!'" - Jonah 3:3-4
Reflection
Have you noticed in Jonah's story that whenever he was in God's will, he was going up? When God first called, the command was "Arise, go to Nineveh." When Jonah rebelled, the text says he "went down to Joppa," then "down into the ship," and finally "down into the inner part of the ship." Sin always takes us downward—further than we wanted to go, costing more than we wanted to pay, keeping us longer than we planned to stay.
But God's second chance to Jonah began with the same word: "Arise." And this time, Jonah "arose and went to Nineveh." When God gives you a second chance, it's an opportunity to recommit to your mission—to say, "God, with whatever time I have left, I want to fulfill your calling."
Perhaps you've wasted time or made mistakes. What matters now is not your past failures but your present response. Will you, like Jonah, arise and go where God sends you?
Your mission, like Jonah's, will involve some form of proclamation. Jonah's message was brief—just eight words—and not particularly eloquent. Yet God used it to spark massive revival throughout Nineveh. This reminds us of two crucial truths: First, salvation comes from the Lord. The weight of conversion doesn't rest on your shoulders or your perfect words. Your job is simply to be a witness. Second, "Faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ" (Romans 10:17). God uses human words to bring people to faith.
You may feel nervous about sharing Jesus with others. That's normal—one definition of evangelism is "two very nervous people talking to each other." But remember that you don't have to have all the right words or answers. God simply calls you to be faithful in sharing what you know, trusting Him with the results.
Reflection Questions:
- What mission has God called you to that you may have been avoiding?
- What fears keep you from sharing your faith with others?
- How might you "arise" today and take one step toward fulfilling your calling?
Action Step:
Share your faith story with one person this week, focusing on how God gave you a second chance.
Prayer
Lord, forgive me for the times I've run from Your call. Today I recommit my life to Your purposes. Give me courage to arise and go wherever You send me. Help me to trust that salvation comes from You alone. Amen.
