Reflection
When Jesus declared "I am the light of the world," He spoke in the Temple courts during the Feast of Tabernacles. Massive candelabras burned throughout the courtyard, commemorating how God led Israel through the wilderness with a pillar of fire by night. Some historians say the light was so brilliant it illuminated the entire city like a stunning diamond.
In that setting, Jesus made an astounding claim: those festival candles would be extinguished, but He would never go out. He didn't say He was a light for Jerusalem or Judah, but the light of the world. The implication was clear—Jesus or darkness. No third alternative exists.
The religious leaders struggled to see Jesus as the Messiah because He looked ordinary. Isn't this just the carpenter from Nazareth? But when He said "I am," using God's personal name from the Old Testament, they understood His claim to divinity. That's why they wanted to stone Him.
We face the same choice today. Will we see Jesus as merely a good teacher, or recognize Him as the light the entire world needs? In Him there is no darkness at all—only light, life, and hope.

What prevents you from fully seeing Jesus as He really is—God in flesh, your only true light?

Father, remove the blindness from my heart. Help me see Jesus clearly as the Light of the world, the one true source of life. Amen.
