"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." — Matthew 11:28
Reflection
Sometimes worry becomes so overwhelming that we need to stop everything and turn to God.
In his book Hearing God, Dallas Willard tells the story of Robert McFarlane, a businessman drowning in stress and financial difficulties, who was one day driving to work when the weight became unbearable. He wanted to drive out of town and leave it all behind.
Then he heard God saying, "Pull over to the curb." McFarlane began to pour out his heart to God as tears poured down his face. He didn't know if he could keep going.
Then God gave him a word that he would never forget: "My Son had strains that you will never know, and when He had those strains, He turned to Me, and that's what you should do."
Robert wept, then went to his office, where 22 major problems were waiting. But almost every problem was substantially resolved before the end of the day.
The miracle wasn't just in the problems being solved—it was in Robert stopping long enough to pray, to turn fully to God.
Most of us keep driving, keep working, keep pushing through, thinking we don't have time to pray. But the truth is, we don't have time not to pray.
When worry overwhelms you, stop. Pull over. Turn to God. Everything shifts when we do.
Reflection Question
What would it look like for me to "pull over" in my current situation and truly turn to God?
Action Step
The next time you feel overwhelmed today, physically stop what you're doing for five minutes and pray. Don't continue until you've turned your burden over to God.
Prayer
Jesus, I come to You weary and burdened. I'm pulling over right now to lay my troubles at Your feet. Thank You for the promise of rest. Help me to stop striving and start trusting. Amen.
