"If you know that he is righteous, you may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of him." — 1 John 2:29 NIV

Reflection

John makes a striking connection: those who truly abide in the righteous Christ will practice righteousness in their daily lives. Abiding is not merely an inner spiritual experience disconnected from outer behavior. True abiding always produces fruit. The tree that is rooted in good soil grows good fruit — it is as natural and inevitable as that.

But notice the word "practices." Righteousness is not a one-time declaration or a spiritual résumé entry. It is a daily practice — a pattern of choices, habits, and commitments that flow from an inner life surrendered to Christ. It means telling the truth when lying would be easier. It means doing the right thing when no one is watching. It means being consistent in private what you claim to be in public.

What does practicing your faith look like? In addition to spending time with the Lord each day, the other activities of an honest, intentional life flow from that relationship. Don't cheat on your taxes, your spouse, or your tests. Tell the truth online and offline. Let your words build people up. Care for the poor and marginalized every week. These are not extraordinary heroics — they are the ordinary, faithful practices of someone who is genuinely abiding.

Righteousness is not about perfection. It is about direction and practice. Every day you wake up and practice again. And in that daily practice, the character of Christ is slowly, steadily formed in you.

Lord, let my life match my beliefs. Where there is inconsistency, convict me gently and give me the grace to change. I want to be the same person in the dark that I am in the light — because You see it all, and Your opinion is the one that matters most. Form Your righteousness in me. Amen.
