"Whoever is ashamed of me and my words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of them when he comes in his glory and in the glory of the Father and of the holy angels." Luke 9:26 (NIV)
Reflection
Shame is a powerful force that can either drive us toward Christ or away from Him. Jesus warns about a particular kind of shame—being ashamed of Him and His words—that has eternal consequences. This isn't about feeling embarrassed occasionally; it's about consistently hiding our faith or compromising our beliefs to fit in with the world.
Consider how easily we can be ashamed of Jesus in subtle ways: keeping quiet when His name comes up in conversation, hiding our Bibles at work, avoiding prayer in public, or failing to acknowledge God when good things happen. We might never openly deny Christ, but our silence speaks volumes about whether we truly consider Him our Lord.
The warning Jesus gives is sobering: if we're ashamed of Him in this life, He will be ashamed of us when He returns in glory. This isn't about perfection—all of us have moments of weakness. It's about the overall pattern of our lives and whether we're willing to identify with Christ even when it's costly.
The antidote to shame is remembering who Jesus is and what He's done for us. When we truly grasp that the Creator of the universe loves us enough to die for us, that He's not ashamed to call us His friends, it transforms our perspective. Why would we be ashamed of the One who gave everything for us?
Living without shame doesn't mean being obnoxious or inappropriate with our faith. It means being authentic about who we are and Who we serve. It means being willing to speak truth in love, to live differently than the world expects, and to give credit to God for His goodness in our lives.
The day is coming when Jesus will be vindicated before all creation. On that day, what will matter is not whether we were popular or successful by worldly standards, but whether we stood with Him when it counted.
