"You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows." — Psalm 23:5b (ESV)
Reflection
David doesn't say his cup is merely full — it overflows. This is the language of abundance, of God's generosity exceeding our needs. The anointing with oil was a sign of blessing, consecration, and the setting apart of someone for a special purpose. David, the shepherd boy, had been anointed by Samuel as king — yet even as king, he recognized that every blessing flowed from God.
Jesus declared in John 10:10, "I came that they may have life and have it abundantly." The Lordship of Christ is not a life of bare minimum survival — it is a life overflowing with purpose, meaning, grace, and eternal hope. Paul echoes this in Ephesians 3:20, speaking of God who "is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think."
But overflow is not just for us to keep. When a cup overflows, everything around it gets wet. God fills us so that our lives pour out grace into the lives of others. Acknowledging Jesus as Lord means recognizing that our abundance — of grace, of hope, of love — is meant to spill out. We are anointed and appointed: set apart for God's purposes and sent into the world to reflect His overflowing goodness to everyone around us.

Do you experience your relationship with God as abundant or as barely enough? What is blocking the overflow?

Identify one person in your life who needs to experience God's goodness today. Find a practical way to let your cup overflow into their life.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, You came to give abundant life. Forgive me for settling for less. Anoint me afresh today with Your Spirit and let Your goodness overflow through me to others. You are Lord of all abundance. May my life reflect that truth. Amen.
