Scripture of the Day
"Mary took a twelve-ounce jar of expensive perfume made from essence of nard, and she anointed Jesus' feet with it, wiping his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance." -- John 12:3 NTL
Reflection
Something had to be broken before the fragrance could fill the house. The alabaster jar, beautiful and sealed, held its treasure perfectly -- but uselessly. It was only when Mary broke it open and poured it out that the aroma was released into the room.
This is a picture of how God works in us. The gifts He has placed inside you -- your compassion, your creativity, your capacity to love and serve -- are often sealed inside a life that has not yet been broken open in surrender. We protect our resources, guard our time, hold our plans tightly, and wonder why our lives don't seem to carry more fragrance.
Mary's offering was costly in multiple dimensions. The perfume represented her financial security -- it was her dowry, her future. Pouring it on Jesus in a room full of men was socially costly. And breaking the jar meant there was no going back, no reclaiming what was given. But it was precisely the totality of the giving that filled the whole house. Half a jar would have been a kindness. The whole jar was a transformation.

Write down one thing you have been holding back from God. Pray over it specifically and ask Him for the courage to break it open.
Prayer
Jesus, You know what I am clutching tightly today. I want to be like Mary -- extravagant, unguarded, fully poured out. Give me the courage to break open what I have been protecting, trusting that what You do with it will be far greater than what I could preserve on my own. Amen.
