Love and Bless Your Enemies

"But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven." - Matthew 5:43-45

Reflection

This might be the most countercultural command Jesus ever gave. Every philosophy before Him said the goal was to get on top and stay on top. But Jesus, who was already on top as Rabbi, Teacher, and Son of God, stooped to the bottom and washed the feet of His followers—including Judas, who would betray Him.

God didn't wait for us to apologize, change, or beg for forgiveness before reconciling us to Himself. While we were still sinners, enemies of God in our minds and behavior, Christ died for us. He didn't curse us; He blessed us. This is the pattern we're called to follow.

The Heavenly Father makes His sun rise on the evil and the good, sends rain on the just and unjust. He's faithful when we're unfaithful. If we only love those who love us, we're no different than anyone else. But when we love our enemies, pray for those who persecute us, and bless those who curse us, we reveal our true identity as children of God.

There's someone you don't like who needs your prayers. There's a group of people you despise whom you're called to bless. This isn't a suggestion—it's the mark of authentic discipleship.

Reflection Question

Who are your "enemies"—those people or groups you find most difficult to pray for? What prevents you from blessing them?

Action Step

Write down the names of three people you struggle with. Commit to praying a blessing over them daily for the next week.

Prayer

Father, Your love for me while I was still Your enemy humbles me. Give me grace to love those who oppose me, to bless those who curse me, and to pray sincerely for those who persecute me. Transform my heart to be more like Yours. Amen.
