Reflection
Here is the central miracle of the Christian faith stated as plainly as possible: Jesus had to be like us in order to rescue us.
His humanity was not decorative — it was load-bearing. Because he was human, he could represent us. Because he was divine, he could save us.
Hebrews makes clear that it was necessary for him to take on human nature in every way. Not optional. Not incidental. Necessary.
A rescue mission requires someone who can enter the situation, and God chose to enter ours completely. He wasn't just sympathetic to human weakness from a distance. He moved into the neighborhood of human experience and lived there.
But he also lived in a way we cannot — in complete obedience to the Father, without sin, without the self-centered turning that marks all of our lives. And because he did, he could stand in our place. His perfect life credited to us. His death absorbing the penalty we owed. His resurrection guaranteeing ours.
This is why the gospel is good news and not just good advice. We don't need a better role model — we need a rescuer. And Jesus is precisely that.
Action Step
Reflect on the difference between seeing Jesus as a model to imitate versus a rescuer to trust. Which posture do you tend toward? How does that affect how you relate to God?
Prayer
Jesus, thank you that you didn't just show me how to live — you did for me what I could never do for myself. I trust you today as my rescuer. Amen.
