"As soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby in my womb leaped for joy." Luke 1:44
Reflection
When Mary arrived and greeted Elizabeth, something extraordinary happened—the baby in Elizabeth's womb leaped for joy! When was the last time you leaped for joy? Maybe you remember as a child the pure joy of running on the playground, being carefree, playing without a worry in the world. Kids don't have to be told to have joy—it comes naturally when they're healthy and secure.
John the Baptist's leap was the first recognition of the Messiah. Before he was even born, he acknowledged Jesus' presence with exuberant joy. This is the kind of joy God wants to restore in us—not manufactured or forced, but a genuine, leap-for-joy response to His presence and promises. It's the joy that causes staff members to jump together for a Christmas photo, faces beaming with delight.
You can have this kind of joy too. Your heart can rejoice. It begins with recognizing what Mary and Elizabeth knew: God is faithful, His promises are true, and the Messiah has come. The good news of great joy announced at Jesus' birth isn't just historical—it's personal and present. When you grasp the reality that God is with you, that He loves you unconditionally, and that His purposes for you are good, your heart can't help but respond. Even amid life's challenges, you can experience moments where joy bubbles up and makes you want to leap.
Reflection Question
What would it take for you to genuinely leap for joy today, and what's preventing you from experiencing that kind of exuberant response to God?
Action Step
Do something physically expressive of joy today—jump, dance, raise your hands—and thank God for the gift of Jesus.
Prayer
Father, I want to experience the kind of joy that makes me leap! Help me recognize Your presence and goodness in my life. Remove the heaviness that weighs me down and restore the simple, childlike joy of knowing You love me and are with me. Let my heart leap at the reality of Jesus. Amen.
