Reflection
Matthew 17 holds two realities in beautiful tension. On one hand, Jesus is fully human — weary, moved with compassion, limited in his earthly body, dependent on prayer. On the other hand, he shines like the sun. Moses and Elijah, the greatest figures of the Old Testament, stand beside him — and the voice of God declares him greater than them both.
He is like us. And he is not like us at all.
This tension is not a problem to be solved — it is the very heart of the gospel. Because Jesus was like us, he could stand in our place. He knows our weakness from the inside. But because he was not like us, he could do what we never could — live in perfect obedience, defeat sin, walk out of a tomb. His humanity makes him approachable. His divinity makes him effective. You need both. A merely human Jesus could sympathize but not save. A merely divine Jesus could save but not truly understand. You have a Savior who is both — and that changes everything.
Reflection Question
How does holding both Jesus' humanity and divinity together change the way you relate to him today?
Action Step
Spend time in prayer approaching Jesus in both ways — come to him as a friend who understands you, and then worship him as the Lord who has all power and authority.
Prayer
Jesus, you are my Savior who understands me — and the Lord who is over all things. I need both today. I come to you with my weakness, trusting your strength. Be both my companion and my King today. Amen.
