Reflection

When God gives you a second chance, the first appropriate response is gratitude. After Jonah's rescue from the belly of the fish, he didn't immediately run to fulfill his mission—he first expressed thanksgiving. He recognized that his deliverance was undeserved grace, a gift from God that demanded acknowledgment.

Jonah demonstrated his gratitude in three specific ways. First, he sang a song of praise. Throughout Scripture, we find over 400 references to singing and 50 direct commands to sing to the Lord. When you experience God's grace, your heart should overflow with melody. Second, Jonah made a sacrifice. Offering something valuable to God acknowledges that everything belongs to Him—we are merely stewards of His gifts. Third, Jonah made a vow, pledging to fulfill his calling and proclaim that salvation comes from God alone.

How long has it been since you paused to express genuine gratitude for God's grace in your life? The fact that you're alive today is evidence of His mercy. You've been given another day, another opportunity to live for Him. This grace isn't something we deserve—it's a gift freely given.

Today could be your day of renewed gratitude. Like Jonah, you might express it through worship, singing praises to God whether in a congregation or alone in your car. You might demonstrate it through sacrificial giving to your church or a non-profit organization. And you might make a vow—writing down your commitment to use this second chance for God's glory.

Gratitude changes our perspective. When we focus on what God has done rather than what we lack, our hearts shift from entitlement to wonder. We begin to see each day not as something owed to us but as a precious gift to be stewarded well.

Prayer

Father, forgive me for taking Your grace for granted. Today I choose gratitude. I thank You for second chances I don't deserve. Help me to express my thanks not just with words but with my whole life. Amen.
