Scripture of the Day
"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us." -- John 1:14
Reflection
Gospel tells us that the eternal Word of God became flesh -- became visible -- and dwelt among us. The word translated "dwelt" carries the image of pitching a tent, of settling in, of making a home in the middle of the ordinary human story.
This is how God enters the world. Not with the fanfare we expect, but with the quiet intimacy of a child born in a stable, noticed first by shepherds. The invisible God makes himself known -- but often in ways that require adjusted eyes to see.
The same God who moved invisibly behind the scenes in Esther's story took on flesh and walked among us. And even then, many missed him entirely. They expected something grander. What they got was a carpenter from Nazareth who ate with sinners and prayed in gardens.
John 1:18 tells us that no one has ever seen God -- but that the Son has made him known. When we want to see the invisible God, we look to Jesus. And when we look to Jesus, we find a God who shows up in the ordinary, who is present in the crisis and in the quiet, who pitches his tent in the middle of our actual lives.
