Scripture of the Day
“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” — John 1:12
Reflection
There is a simple but searching truth in the sermon: God has no grandchildren -- only children. The faith of a devoted grandmother, the prayers of a godly parent, the heritage of a family that has walked with God for generations -- these are gifts beyond measure. But they cannot substitute for a personal encounter with Jesus Christ.
This is not a harsh truth. It is a liberating one. It means that no one is disqualified from direct access to God because their background is broken or their family had no faith. And it means that no one is automatically included because their family did. Each person stands before the same question -- "Who do you say I am?" -- and each person must answer for themselves.
Faith that is borrowed eventually runs dry. The grandmother's prayers can cover a grandchild for years, can surround them with grace and protection, can point them toward the door. But they cannot open it for them. At some point, each person must encounter the living Christ for themselves -- not the version passed down through the family, but the Jesus who speaks, who calls, who transforms.
That encounter is available to anyone. It is not reserved for the spiritually prepared or the theologically educated. It comes by revelation, as Jesus told Peter -- a gift from the Father to anyone who genuinely seeks.
Question for Personal Reflection
Is your faith genuinely your own, or are you still living on borrowed belief?
Action Step
Pray today for one person in your family who has inherited a religious background but may not yet have a personal faith in Christ.
Prayer
Lord, let inherited religion become personal faith. Meet every person in our families and communities with a revelation of who you truly are. Amen.
